Broken link on your widget? Here's a fix!

Welp, since our last post, and through all the helpful feedback we've been getting, we realized we had a small typo in the embed code. If you got the code from the widget customizer, your robo.to might not link back properly in all browsers. Our bad.

Here's a simple fix to get it up and linking again. It might require your eagle-eyes for a moment, so bear with us.

Step one:

In your embed code, look for the word href - it'll show up twice  This is what tells the widget where to link to. You'll notice the second one is significantly more confusing looking than the first one. That's the one we're going to replace.

<div style='width:288px; height:288px; border:7px solid #000000;'><object width='288' height='288'><param name='movie' value='http://robo.to/swf/smirk.swf?href=http://robo.to/cole&sName=SmirksController&fx=1&hideBlerb=0&target=_blank&loop=1&cURI=rtmp%3A%2F%2Frobo.to%2Fsmirk_ul&uuid=6ff2c8e387236c907ca839301597801e6453800b&sURL=http%3A%2F%2Frobo.to%2Famf%2Fgateway'></param><param name='allowFullScreen' value='true'></param><param name='allowscriptaccess' value='always'></param><embed src='http://robo.to/swf/smirk.swf?href=http%3A%2F%2Frobo.to%cole&sName=SmirksController&fx=1&hideBlerb=0&target=_blank&loop=1&cURI=rtmp%3A%2F%2Frobo.to%2Fsmirk_ul&uuid=6ff2c8e387236c907ca839301597801e6453800b&sURL=http%3A%2F%2Frobo.to%2Famf%2Fgateway' type='application/x-shockwave-flash' allowscriptaccess='always' allowfullscreen='true' width='288' height='288'></embed></object></div>

Step two:

Copy the first one href=http://robo.to/cole (where "cole" is your own username) and Paste it over the second one so that they both match. Be careful not to paste-over the "&" following your link - that'll break it too. Once you get it working, you can even use a different link here if you want - that part's up to you :)

<div style='width:288px; height:288px; border:7px solid #000000;'><object width='288' height='288'><param name='movie' value='http://robo.to/swf/smirk.swf?href=http://robo.to/cole&sName=SmirksController&fx=1&hideBlerb=0&target=_blank&loop=1&cURI=rtmp%3A%2F%2Frobo.to%2Fsmirk_ul&uuid=6ff2c8e387236c907ca839301597801e6453800b&sURL=http%3A%2F%2Frobo.to%2Famf%2Fgateway'></param><param name='allowFullScreen' value='true'></param><param name='allowscriptaccess' value='always'></param><embed src='http://robo.to/swf/smirk.swf?href=http://robo.to/cole&sName=SmirksController&fx=1&hideBlerb=0&target=_blank&loop=1&cURI=rtmp%3A%2F%2Frobo.to%2Fsmirk_ul&uuid=6ff2c8e387236c907ca839301597801e6453800b&sURL=http%3A%2F%2Frobo.to%2Famf%2Fgateway' type='application/x-shockwave-flash' allowscriptaccess='always' allowfullscreen='true' width='288' height='288'></embed></object></div>

And you're done!

Our apologies for the mix-up. Send us an email at info [at] particularplace.com and we'll send you a free Robo.to wallpaper pack for your phone, as seen in the Particle Shop: http://www.particlebrand.com/v2/shop.html

Customize a badge the easy way

You can grab your embed code and manually edit the parameters we listed here, or make it easy for yourself and just click "Customize Badge" from your Share page.

Play with the scale by dragging the corners, add or remove the text and border, have it loop or not, then copy the embed code - easy!

Here are some example uses. Let us know of others so we can list it below.

Crusher on the phone

My project last weekend was to clean up the iPhone (or mobile web browser) view of Crusher. Here's a screenshot. More big look/feel improvements coming soon.

First, poll your friends for the best date!

Often it's tough to know if you're choosing the right date for your event. Those you most want to attend might not be available at that date. In such cases, use the date poll feature in Crusher (http://crush3r.com). Here's how:

1) Create an event page as you normally would with all the event info and customization included.

2) In the Date module, select the date poll feature (see image) and add any number of date options you are considering. Save. Notice on your event page that date poll is on.

3) Start inviting some guests to poll. Invite only those who you'd really want to be able to attend. When they see the event page, they will be able to vote by responding to each of the individual dates you picked.

4) Soon you'll notice the positive and negative RSVP's on each date in your event page. Once you feel you've gotten enough votes, end the poll by selecting the best date.

5) Notice that the date you selected became the main date of the event. The RSVP's gathered so far will automatically carry over to your guest list. No need for those guests to RSVP again. Guests can change their RSVP whenever they want.

6) Invite everyone else!

How to import your vCards into robo.to

Here are some basic instructions on how to get your contacts out of your current address book as vCards that you can import into Robo.to. This is the best way to get your contacts into Robo.to as it includes the entire set of contact information (name, phone number, email, address, IM). Using the Plaxo route only imports email addresses.

In the future, the mobile version of Robo.to will let you sync it with your mobile contacts and so this will all be much simpler.

For now, here are the steps:

1. Open Address Book version X.0 or greater.

2. Highlight the Group labeled "All" to view all of your entries. Then...

If you want to export it all your contacts into a group vCard, go ahead and select File > Export > Export Group vCard.

If you want to export just some contacts, first select the Name of the contacts then go ahead and select File > Export > Export Group vCard.

3. Enter a name for the file and a location where it will be saved.

4. The file that you have s aved can now be imported into Robo.to.

Mention someone in Robo.to, Twitter, or Facebook

Wow, you can now mention your pal's usernames in Robo.to by preceding it with a " : " symbol as in the example image below. An alert appears to that person you mentioned. Clicking on the yellow alert number pulls up your status update which mentioned them.

You can mention your pal's username in Robo.to and then relay your status to Twitter. When your status prints in Twitter it resolves to your pal's Twitter username. Neat!

Give it a try. There's also a nice auto-suggest feature as you start to type in case your memory is bad.

Baby don't forget my number

As you change your email address, phone number, or move from city to city, keep it easy on your trusted friends by sharing your latest and greatest contact info in via your Robo.to account.

1. Enter and save your info in your My Account page.

2. Go to your Crowd page and select who you'd like to share it with.

The next time your friend pulls up your Robo.to card from their phone (or desktop) they'll be able to see it and easily initiate a call, text, or email - and you'll start getting praises more often such as "Hey, you're looking so much better today!"

Really put your face into it

Add your robo.to video status update as a badge on your personal website or blog. It automatically displays your latest!

Make your badge using the customizer. Or manually edit the code by going to your "Share my Face" page to grab it then tweak the following:

Size
By default the size is set to a 288 pixel square. You can change the size of the badge by changing this variable to whatever pixel size you wish. There are a total of six instances of this in the code that would need to be changed.

Border
By default we have a 7px border. Simply change the 7px to 0px in order to remove the border. Simply change the color from black to another HTML color like pink or lightblue if you don't like the dark gray.

Loop
By default we loop the video status playback endlessly. If you think this will be too annoying on your page, you can turn off the looping and have it only play once after the page loads. Mousing over it will play it. To do this, simply look for the &loop=1 bit in the code and change it to &loop=0. There are two instances of this in the code that would need to be changed.

Text
By default we also display the status message text over the video. If you prefer to not display this, simply look for the &hideBlerb=0 bit in the code and change it to &hideBlerb=1. There are two instances of this in the code that would need to be changed.

Find the others!

There are three ways you can add your friends to your crowd listed below.

Note: Soon you'll be able to install Robo.to as an iPhone or Android app on your phone. That would enable you to easily keep your crowd in sync with your mobile address book. We're still working on that.

1. Import your address book by signing in and clicking the "Add my Friends" button at the bottom of your Robo.to card. From here, choose the "Pick from my address book" button. This will launch a widget that lets you import your contacts from wherever they are on the web.

2. Add a friend one at a time by entering their email address (name and phone number is optional). It must be the same email they use for their Robo.to account.

3. Add a friend from their card if your friend already has a Robo.to account. Look for the "Add to Crowd" button below their video status. Click this to add the person to your crowd.

Social Robot

Robo.to's searchable Statusphere helps you find and keep up with people you know. Cut out the riffraf by adding friends to your 'Crowd' so that you can view their activity in a separate, uncluttered stream. Both 'Crowd' and 'Everyone' streams are dynamic search-enabled-- just choose which stream you want to search and select the appropriate tab (1) and start typing a word that describes what you're looking for in the search bar (2). Yey.
